Basic / Location Tab

Address

Enter the components of the address into their designated fields.  Do not combine the entries.

  1. Numbered Avenues that run East/West, such as 3rd, 10th etc, typically lie in all four quadrants of the city and require a 2 character prefix. (I.e., NW, NE, SW, or SE)

  2. Named streets, such as Tyler, Polk Virginia, etc, typically lie in only one or two quadrants of the city and should only have a single character directional prefix entered (I.e., N, S, E, W)

Many times the address export from VisiCAD is incorrect or incomplete due to the limited information given by the reporting party. The address entered here should be the location where the incident actually occurred regardless of the dispatch address. Always review these entries to ensure that they are correct.

Radio Buttons

There are several "radio buttons" located down the left-hand side of the Basic/Location tab that can be used  to better identify the location of the incident.

Zip Code-

Sometimes a "0" will be exported by the CAD system into the Zip Code field.  This will keep the field from being yellow, but it is still obviously wrong and needs to be corrected.

Inc District-

This is the district where the incident took place. The entry should match the Inc District entry on the Basic/Response tab exactly, including text case. If these two entries do match some reports that run against the database will not function properly and/or exclude the incidents. For example, an entry of "04" on the Basic/Response tab and an entry of "4" on the Basic/Location tab convey the same information to a human but do not equate to a  "match" for a  computer since the second entry lacks the preceding "0". The same is true of the entries "pot" , "POT" and "Pot" because the first entry is lower case,  the second  is upper case while the third is mixed.

Census Tract-

Refer to the census map and enter the appropriate number. It best to tab into this field rather than click into it using the mouse to ensure proper cursor placement and avoid a misplaced decimal or blank numeric character.

Property Type-

Entries in this field are somewhat complex and require that the person completing the report take the time to select the most appropriate code. Codes that include the word “other” in their description should be avoided and if used will require an explanation in the narrative. Usually, there is a better code choice available.

For incidents involving mobile property, the Property Use code should reflect the use of the property on which the Mobile Property is located at the time of the incident.

Below are some examples of Property Use codes for commonly encountered locations.

Property Loss-

Almost all fire incidents require an entry in this field.  One possible exception is an uncontained trash fire. Dumpsters and other contained trash fires will have loss entry because of the damage to the container.
