Basic / Location Tab
Enter the components of the address into their designated fields. Do not combine the entries.
Number - Numeric portion of the address. 300, 4219, 509, etc.
Prefix - All addresses and street names should include a directional prefix. This entry is very important for reporting purposes. The following rules should govern this entry.
Numbered Avenues that run East/West, such as 3rd, 10th etc, typically lie in all four quadrants of the city and require a 2 character prefix. (I.e., NW, NE, SW, or SE)
Named streets, such as Tyler, Polk Virginia, etc, typically lie in only one or two quadrants of the city and should only have a single character directional prefix entered (I.e., N, S, E, W)
Street or Highway - The is the name of the street or highway, such as Bell, Grand, I-40, US 87, FM 2219, etc.
Type - This entry designates the type of street or highway. Typical entries here include, St., Ave., Rd., etc.
Suffix - This field is not used by the AFD and should always be left blank.
Apt/Suite - Enter the apartment number or letter if applicable. Do not enter text preceding or explanatory text such as Apt., Lot, Space, Room, etc. in the field.
Many times the address export from VisiCAD is incorrect or incomplete due to the limited information given by the reporting party. The address entered here should be the location where the incident actually occurred regardless of the dispatch address. Always review these entries to ensure that they are correct.
Address - This button is the default and will "gray out" the number and cross street information fields and not allow entries into these fields.
Intersection - Using intersections as the location is acceptable only on traffic accidents. Even then, the numeric address, an estimate used in conjunction with the "In Front of' button (I.e., Use 400 S Van Buren instead of SW 4th & S Van Buren) is far superior for reporting purposes.
In Front of - Click this button if the incident occurred in front of an address. This leaves the Number field in tact but provides a more descriptive location. This is the preferred method of documenting vehicle accident locations.
In Rear of - Click this button if the incident occurred behind an address. Useful for dumpster fires.
Adjacent to - Click this button if you cannot find a definitive address for the incident. This is useful for grass fires in vacant lots, fields, etc, and indicates that the address is an estimate.
Sometimes a "0" will be exported by the CAD system into the Zip Code field. This will keep the field from being yellow, but it is still obviously wrong and needs to be corrected.
This is the district where the incident took place. The entry should match the Inc District entry on the Basic/Response tab exactly, including text case. If these two entries do match some reports that run against the database will not function properly and/or exclude the incidents. For example, an entry of "04" on the Basic/Response tab and an entry of "4" on the Basic/Location tab convey the same information to a human but do not equate to a "match" for a computer since the second entry lacks the preceding "0". The same is true of the entries "pot" , "POT" and "Pot" because the first entry is lower case, the second is upper case while the third is mixed.
Refer to the census map and enter the appropriate number. It best to tab into this field rather than click into it using the mouse to ensure proper cursor placement and avoid a misplaced decimal or blank numeric character.
Entries in this field are somewhat complex and require that the person completing the report take the time to select the most appropriate code. Codes that include the word other in their description should be avoided and if used will require an explanation in the narrative. Usually, there is a better code choice available.
For incidents involving mobile property, the Property Use code should reflect the use of the property on which the Mobile Property is located at the time of the incident.
Below are some examples of Property Use codes for commonly encountered locations.
Alleys With very few exceptions, these should be coded as 983 Pipeline, Power line or other utility right of way. Alleys are not streets. Additionally, when the incident occurs in an alley, the In Rear of radio button should be checked to further define the location of the incident.
Streets There are several types of Street or Highway codes available in the Property Use Field and there are very few streets in Amarillo that do not fit into one of these Street codes. Please do not use 960 - Street, other unless one of the more specific codes do not apply.
Care Facilities - Nursing Homes, Assisted Living, Adult Day Care, etc. There are several different types of these facilities and each has a specific Property Use Code. The tendency is to classify any location that cares for the elderly as a Nursing Home. This is not correct. There are specific Property Use Codes that apply depending upon several factors. A sheet entitled Amarillo Care Facilities is on the I-Drive that lists all of the care facilities in Amarillo along with their correct Property Use Code. Please review this listing and take the time to select the proper code when completing a report on incidents at these locations.
Shelters According to the NFIRS Guide, locations such as the Salvation Army and Faith City Mission should be coded with Property Use 439 Boarding/rooming houses.
Cancelled Responses When no AFD units arrive at an incident, the Property Use code should always be UUU Undetermined.
Almost all fire incidents require an entry in this field. One possible exception is an uncontained trash fire. Dumpsters and other contained trash fires will have loss entry because of the damage to the container.
